Beware of the Hornworms!!
I picked one off of a tomato at moms house today. Then I went home and checked my plants and I found 5 on one plant!! It was like a hornworm party on there. Now I know why i haven't got one tomato off that plant. I think they are the grossest things around. They are pretty giant too, so I don't know why they are so hard to see. I just wanted to warn everybody. If you are new to gardening: look for tomato plants that have leaves missing, then look for a big green creepy caterpillar looking thing. But beware they have a stinger thing on them so watch where you put your hands. I wish i would have taken a picture but I fed mine to the chickens. If I see another I will get a pic.

comments

Hello everyone,
A few people have asked me how to leave a comment on here. I had it set up wrong where only people with a blogger account could leave comments but, I fixed it. Now you can just click on comment and leave a comment. Then at the bottom it will say comment as: , scroll down and pick name/url or anonomous. If you pick name/url it will come up with a box type in your name and just leave the url part blank. The rest is pretty easy. Leave me a comment if this was helpful :).

I am sorry to report last night something broke into chicken jail and killed one of the white girls. I have now released the rest of them from chicken jail and put them into the main coop. One of the brownies got pecked earlier today so I think rose is still around, it must have been lilly or violet that died. :(

July 4th

so many tomatoes they can't stand up straight- if only they would turn red

ooh baby cauliflower

I bought this lilly last spring and it just now bloomed it's called pandora's box

Well I haven't wrote anything in awhile so I guess I'll give all my 4 followers an update. We just got done watching the fireworks with mom and mark. We watched them at our house this year. The mosquitoes ate me up they even bit me on the butt, not sure how they managed that one. The fireworks were pretty good this year.
As for life at my house it has been pretty busy. Shermie is off work for two weeks :(. It's finally a little cooler it was too darn hot for awhile there. The garden is growing really good. I had a lot of lettuce last week but I have gotten rid of that now. I am getting green beans and squash and a few cherry tomatoes here and there. Hopefully I will get more soon so I can set up a stand in the front yard, and make a little $.
The chickens are getting bigger. The white girls (rose & friends) went to chicken time out, for harassing the brownies. Chicken time out is a cage underneath the pine trees. Rose pecked a hole in buttercups' neck the other day, but she's doing better now. I think I might just build a separate pen for rose & her raptor friends.
The brownies have names now: Buttercup, Gertrude, Pecker, Cinnamon, Foxy Brown and Paprika.
I think that is about all the interesting stuff around here. until next time...........

Thursday, June 11, 2009

I read on the internet that you should put golf balls in your nest box so the chickens will know where to lay their eggs. I cleaned out the shed today and found some so I snuck them in the coop (yes It's still a little early for eggs). It was comical They kept looking at each other like are those yours?
These are my giant red cabbages compared to my foot.

Green Cabbage, Broccoli, Lettuce, Red cabbage and Corn (also weeds)

My main garden

The baby piranah eating weeds

Chicken t.v.

The rain finally came and man did it help. My garden sprang back to life it looks great! This is my first year growing cabbage and they are Huge! The greenbeans made a comeback, the peas have pods already and the tomatoes have bloomed and some even have tomatoes. The only bad thing is the weeds everywhere.

The chickens are doing good. Rose is still chicken queen, Rachel helped me put a black mark on her leg so everyone can tell her apart. Cody came over the other day and I couldn't keep him out of the chicken run. He also helped me catch rose, actually it was more like herding.

The dogs are good Chester is over his hunger strike. Sadie is crazy as always, she barks at night all the time and I finally figured it out the other day. She is barking at airplanes.

We had a pretty successful yardsale last weekend. Shermie and I got lots of goodies while junking. Life is pretty good around here.

That's about all for this week

Short Update:
We put all the chickens in together over the weekend. Rose is being bossy as usual but she hasn't hurt anyone yet (she herds the others). I clipped all their feathers and I named one baby buttercup, the rest are still nameless. The babies are much friendlier than the bigger birds they actually let me pet them. I have been letting the biggers birds out to free range when I'm outside. They don't try to run away but it's tricky getting them to go back in. I finally found out what breed my big chickens are they are white leghorns. Which means they will lay large white eggs. Which will amuse me cause the others will lay brown eggs, so I'll have variety. As you can see from the picture above I picked some lettuce from the garden today for salads. Shermie made fun of me for taking salad pictures, but we agreed it tasted good (for a salad). That's all for now.....

I am trying to come up with some good names for the baby chickens. Does anyone have any fun suggestions? Leave a comment below if you do.

Rose queen of the coop

Rose getting ready to peck one of the babies
Hello everyone,
It is HOT outside, and i'm sick of it. I haven't done much lately but I thought I'd update my page. Chester is on a hunger strike because of the heat he refuses to eat (it's 85 degrees inside the house).
The garden is doing pretty good. The cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, peas and corn are doing well. The Tomatoes are looking a little sickley but most of them are blooming. I am hoping it will rain tonight so everything can get a good drink and have a growth spurt. I am amazed at how many people have gardens this year. I drove through the alleys this morning and about every other house has one. It's pretty neat, they even have a name for it the media calls them recession gardens. Yes, we were junkin' this morning. Sherman found a small tiller someone threw in the trash he's gonna fix it. I didn't find anything. We went to the flea markets this weekend and got some good stuff. I bought an outside playpen for the chickens. My plan was to put it in the part of the garden where nothing is planted. And they were supposed to eat the grass and weeds. Haha the holes were too big and they just walked right out. Guess who's better at catching chickens me or Shermie.... nope you were wrong, It's me. But it sure was fun watching Shermie run around the yard with a net chasing a chicken. I caught two before he was done.
The baby chickens have grown out of the ugly stage and are getting cute again. I have them out in the coop seperated from the big chickens. They are getting friendly but they still don't have names. When I open the coop door they try to jump out. But they don't run away yet. When they get out they get distracted by the big chickens. They just stare in amazement like whoa they are huge! Then Rose tries to peck them.
I put the big ones in the run and gave them Sadies old dog house to sleep in, they like to sleep on top of it though. Rose has become the chicken queen. She likes to chase the other two away if they get too close to me. Apparently I belong to her. How can I tell which one is Rose you may ask if they all look the same. Because Rose doesn't hang out with the other two most of the time. She likes to stand on top of the dog kennel like it's her castle. I have been trying them out on different foods. They say you should give your chickens kitchen scraps. So far I have tried crushed corn flakes, apples, bread, lettuce, popcorn and dog food. Guess which is the only one they would eat. Yep dog food, oh well somebody ought to eat it! Well that's all the news here at the farm.

The Dark Side of Chester P. Hound

Many of you know of Chester as my super cute and friendly basset hound. But I must tell you he has a darker side. I have known for awhile now that he had a problem. You see every time I leave the room I have to make sure my purse is closed. Sometimes I forget and when I come back he is running around the room with my hair schrunchie in his mouth. At first I just thought maybe he just likes scrunchies, so I gave him his own to play with. I thought I had solved that problem then one day I slipped up and left my open purse on the couch while I went in the other room. I came back to find him running around the room with my scrunchie again while his was laying on the floor. I thought this dog has a problem so, I took his scrunchie away.
Up until today he always got into my purse and got the scrunchie and nothing else. But a few minutes ago I got on the computer to check my email. Things were quiet for a few minutes then Chester walked into the room. I looked over and said what's that you got there Chester? Imagine my suprise when I realized it was two dollar bills! I chased him down and pryed his mouth open and got the money back. In the living room I found more money on the floor. I'm not sure what he was going to do with the money but I have my ideas. My guess is he was planning on trotting down to the store to buy a whole package of scrunchies. So, if you ever come to visit keep your purse with you at all times.
